Fall Camping

In September we went camping in the Sluice Boxes in Montana with Heath and Angel. The weather was just about perfect (it got a little chilly in the evening) and it was really pretty. We left a car at each end and set up camp not far from the trail head. The plan was to hike down to the second car, drive back, and hike back to our camp.

Sophie had her first experience (and second, and third, and....) with fording rivers. She wasn't sure about it at the beginning, but she kept swimming and swimming and did a great job. We were very proud of her and she was pooped by the end of the day. The trail followed an old railroad bed and there was still a lot of evidence of the old tracks (we even found some old rail cars).

We got to the end of the trail before we realized we had left our car keys back at the camp! Luckily we were able to flag down a pickup almost immediately. They were nice enough to end their bear hunt to take us back to the trail head. It was also Sophie's first experience in the back of a truck, but she was so tired she just curled up in my lap and slept.

The trail went along an old train track, and there were a lot of ties left

The water was so pretty and clear!

Sophie, our little river fording champ!

What a gorgeous view!

Sophie sniffed out this tiny owl pellet skull

Scary-ass bridge we had to walk across.
Ok, maybe it was only scary for me, but I still did it!

A pretty awesome train tunnel
